A TRANSGENDER model who was booted out of a Miss Universe competition for being born a man has won the right to re-enter the contest.
Curvy Jenna Talackova, 23, was disqualified from Miss Universe Canada last month when bosses discovered that she used to be a man.But more than 25,000 people signed an online petition calling for her to be reinstated as a contestant. Yesterday pageant bosses, The Miss Universe Organization, issued a statement saying that Jenna could compete as long as she meets "gender recognition requirements".
The body said: The Miss Universe Organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.
The New York-based group did not specify which other competitions standards Jenna would have to meet. Jenna began hormone therapy at 14 and underwent gender reassignment surgery at 19, according to a 2010 interview posted on YouTube.
Yesterdays statement from the Miss Universe Organization overruled an earlier one from Miss Universe Canada, which said Jenna was eliminated as a finalist because she did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form.
At the time, the national director of Miss Universe Canada told telly network CTV that each contestant must be a naturally born female.
