Bukom Banku, also referred to as Braimah Kamoko, retained his WBO African Light Heavy weight title last week in Accra but the feat did not come on a silver platter.
His Sweden-based Ugandan opponent Hamza Wandera bowed out prematurely but left an indelible mark in the career of the Ghanaian champion.
He succeeded in sending Banku to the canvas at the embryonic stages (Round 1) of the fight with a powerful hook.
Banku declared in an interview: This is my first fall. I have never experienced such a thing in my boxing career, he is a good fighter.
The Ghanaian boxer stated: The blow made me more cautious. I changed my tactics and it worked for me.
He is a good fighter but he cant stand my punches; that is why he complained of bad officiating. I dont believe the fight would have travelled the full distance if he had continued.
I am now concentrating on moving up. I wouldnt grant him a rematch, he added.
Wandera, ahead of the bout, had bragged that he will eat Banku to end his unbeaten run. Banku, on the other hand, gave the visitor the assurance that he will eat the Banku alright, but will throw up in the ring.
And that raised the stakes in the game watched by a large crowd.
Banku characteristically mounted the ring carrying a butterfly sewing machine and bread to an expectant crowd.
