Ghana, 41 Countries Register For CHAN

Ghana is among the 42 countries who have registered to play in the qualifiers for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), reports GHANAsoccernet.com.

The Local Black Stars have been registered to play to qualify for the tournament which will be played in Rwanda early next year.

The draw for the tournament will be held by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on 5 April at its headquarters in Cairo next week.

The CHAN is in its fourth edition and it is the competition reserved for home-based players only.

Ghana have been placed in West Zone B where CAF has scheduled three countries to qualify for the zone that includes Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast Niger, Nigeria and Togo.

Just three countries from North Africa have registered to play in the qualifiers for the competition with Libya, Morocco and Tunisia as the countries to fight for the two slots from that zone.

Algeria, one of the tough sides in Africa, are among the countries from the north to have opted out.

The qualifiers will be held between 19-21 June and 28-30 August.

Rwanda, the host country, has automatically qualified.

The final tournament was scheduled from January 16 to February 7, 2016.

Zones and Number of countries to qualify

North Zone (To qualify 2): Libya, Morocco, Tunisia.

West Zone A (To qualify 2): Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone.

West Zone B (To Qualify 3): Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Togo.

Central Zone (To Qualify 3): Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Chad, DR Congo, Gabon.

Central East region (3 to qualify including Rwanda, the host country): Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.

South Zone (To qualify 3): South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
