Gov't Petitions High Court To Dissolve GFA

The Government has filed a petition at the High Court for the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Citi News sources say the petition if granted, will give the government the mandate to dissolve the disgraced football association.

The government in an earlier statement last week said it was already taking steps to dissolve the association.

This follows the fallout from investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ latest exposé on corruption in Ghana football.

Several high-ranking members in the GFA, including its then-President Kwesi Nyantakyi, have been implicated in acts of corruption.

The investigative journalist caught many Ghanaian FA officials and referees in alleged match-fixing deals.

Top football administrators were also seen taking money to influence call-ups for players into the national team and more playing time.

Mr. Nyantakyi, who was also the first Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), was the first person publicly implicated in alleged corruption ahead of the screening of the video, titled #Number12, screening.

He used the name of the President, the Vice President and other senior officers of the government to collect money and lure supposed foreign investors interested in establishing businesses in Ghana.

He later resigned as the President of the Association.

The Police have since announced they will investigate all FA officials implicated in the investigative piece.

The GFA’s Ethics Committee, headed by the Director of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau, COP Kofi Boakye, has been tasked to look into the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) on Monday voted to convene an extraordinary congress within 5 days to elect new executives for the FA.

It has also tasked a 7-member delegation led by Chairman, Cudjoe Fianoo, to engage the Youth and Sports Ministry for an immediate restructuring of the FA.
