As part of activities lined up to commemorate the 50th anniversary celebrations of the creation of the Brong-Ahafo Region, an Under-14 soccer boys Gala championship took place at the weekend at the Coronation Park in Sunyani.
The event organised by the Regional Sports Council in conjunction with the Regional Coordinating Council featured six selected teams representing the various Districts and Municipalities of the Region.
Mr Paul Wilson, Regional Sports Development Officer told the GNA Sports that the six Districts emerged from a preliminary competition held between August 1 and August 29.
The six Districts that qualified for the Gala were Sunyani, Berekum, Techiman and Wenchi Municipal Assembly, Asunafo North and Atebubu-Amanten.
The selected footballers were taken through an extensive screening exercise to determine the rightful weight of 45kg before the commencement of the competition.
Only one of the 137 selected players was disqualified.
Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister said the Gala was aimed at uniting the entire Region as it prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
He therefore urged the various teams to exhibit fair play and called on the players to portray love and unity throughout the competition to show brotherliness as a true reflection of the culture of the people in the Region.
The first match between Atebubu-Amanten District and Asunafo North District ended 3-3 at full time and when the game went into penalties Atebubu won.
In the second game, Wenchi Municipal beat Techiman Municipal Assembly 1-0.
The final game will be played at a date yet to be fixed by the organizers later this month.
