Co-hosts Gabon crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after losing 5-4 on penalties to Mali on Sunday in the quarter-final.
National icon Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed his third kick and Barcelona star Seydou Keita tucked home the last spot kick to send the Eagles of Mali through to the semi-final.
Gabon opened the scoring on 55 minutes through Eric Moulougui but Mali were unwavering and struck the equalizer through strong man Diakite.
Mali will now play favourites Ivory Coast on Wednesday in Libreville.
On Saturday, the co-hosts Equatorial Guinea were eliminated by Ivory Coast after a 3-0 defeat in Bata.
