Kwasi Appiah Negotiated His Own Salary – Ghana Fa Boss

New Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah negotiated his own salary with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), it has been revealed.

This is the first time in the history of Ghana football that a local coach has been allowed to negotiate his salary.

It is speculated that the coach will receive US$20,000 monthly salary.

Appiah takes over from Goran Stevanovic who was sacked following the Black Stars fourth place finish at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

It was the norm for a Ghanaian coach to be given a letter and asked to start work without negotiating his salary and terms of contract.

But the GFA says the new coach negotiated his salary and conditions of employment.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reached an agreement with Kwesi Appiah over his terms of contract as the Black Stars coach,” the GFA said in a statement.

“Following the meeting, the two sides reached a mutual agreement on Appiah’s terms of contract.”

Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi added that there were lots of factors considered before reaching an agreement over the new coach’s salary.

“When you are going into a negotiation, there are a lot of factors that will be called into question,” Ghana FA boss Nyantakyi said.

“The fact that the previous coach got €30,000, does not guarantee the incoming coach the same salary.

“He may get more or less depending on his qualification, experience, and his ability to bargain and negotiate.”

Appiah’s first task will be to prepare the team for a World Cup 2014 qualifying match at home to Lesotho in June.

That will be followed by a chance for Ghana to gain revenge over their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final victors Zambia – it was that 1-0 defeat which ultimately led to the dismissal of Stevanovic.

Appiah will be desperate to avoid a similar fate against the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winners in only his second match in permanent charge of Ghana, as he aims to make a strong start in Group D.

Sudan are the other team in the group, which is the second of three rounds of qualifying for the tournament in Brazil.
