Akwasi Appiah wants to win the Africa Cup of Nations as a coach haven been part of the last Ghana team that clinched the coveted trophy in 1982.
The 52-year-old led the Black Stars to qualify for the next edition of the tournament after beating Malawi 1-0 on Saturday to proceed on a 3-0 aggregate scoreline.
Ghana has struggled to get close to the title since winning it in 1982 – the closest the Black Stars have come was getting to the grand finale in 2010 only to miss out to a more experienced Egyptian side.
But coach Appiah wants to end the over 30-year wait haven met his first target of qualifying the nation to the tournament.
“Being a coach my ambition was to try and qualify the nation to the Cup of Nations,” he said.
“Now we will do our best to repeat what we were able to do in 1982.”
Ghana finished a disappointing fourth last term in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea after starting the competition as pre-tournament favourites.
They are again being one of the teams being touted to annex the title next year in South Africa.
