Supporters of the New Patriotic Party last Wednesday February 6 2013 celebrated the defeat of the national team by their Burkinabe counterparts in the semi-finals match at the twenty-ninth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.
According to reports received from the Ashanti Regional capital, Kuamsi, when the Black Stars lost the penalty shoot out to their Burkinabe counterparts, many of the supporters in the NPP’s strong hold were spotted wildly jubilating, saying “Mo awia aba no mu be je enuoyam so” literally meaning you have stolen our vote you want to take glory too.
The NPP supporters in the Kumasi tooted their horns the very moment Ghana lost the match to the Burkinabe saying ‘Nia Ghana befa Nigeria enfa’ meaning Nigeria should win rather than Ghana.
Others were seen buying assorted drinks for their friends and those they hardly knew because Ghana lost the semi-final, in a penalty shoot out, to the Burkinabe The Herald newspaper scouts learnt.
It was all joy and merry making among the hardline NPP supporters in the region because of the Stars loss.
The party supporters who are mainly Ashantes forgot that the coach of the team, Mr. Kwesi Appiah; is one of their own and that if he had won the cup, he would surely present it to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashante king and subsequently brief him on his success.
The report says some key members of the supporters were heard on some of the NPP radio stations, claiming that the Blacks Stars could not win the game because the favour of God was not on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by John Dramani Mahama because it had stolen the mandate of the people in the December 7, Presidential polls.
