The Black Maidens suffered their first defeat at the FIFA U-17 World Cup underway in Costa Rica after losing 1-2 at the Tibas Stadium on Saturday.

The Maidens staged a late recovery, profiting from a numerical advantage but could not draw parity.

The results means Canada joins Ghana to qualify to the next stage of the competition on five points, one less than the Maidens.

Canada took the lead on the eight minutes through Marie Levasseur. Levasseur darted to pick a pass from the middle and after her first effort was blocked, she picked herself up from the ground for a second attempt that landed at the far post with goalkeeper Azume Adams compromised.

Canada piled the pressure there on and Adams was forced to dive full length to tip to safety from Sarah Kinzner in 12 minutes.

The closes Ghana came was when Lily Niber-Lawrence got to the end of a pass from Priscilla Adubea, dashed forward and let fly one which was cooly saved by goalkeeper Rylee Foster in the 31st minute.

Canada consolidate their lead in 39minutes as Levasseur headed home from a deep cross from the far left after Marie Metivier beat Gladys Amfobea to the pace contest to swing in right on the corner line.

The Maidens struggled to grab control despite enjoying a numerical advantage after Bianca St George received the marching off for bringing down advancing Adubea after recess.

Against the run of play, substitute Sandra Owusu Ansah pulled a goal back for Ghana after profiting from poor clearance by Canada to race ahead of her markers.

The numerical advantage began to tell as the Maidens pushed for parity, outnumbering Canada at the final third.

Ghana awaits the results of the match between Venezuela and Italy to know their next opponent for the quarter finals on Thursday.
