GNPC Shocked...

Headline sponsor of the Black Stars, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC ), says it will ask the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to explain why it collected monies from it to finance some friendly matches of the Black Stars even though the cost of playing in all those matches had already been absorbed by football agents.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GNPC, Alex Mould, made this known when he appeared before the Presidential Commission investigating Ghana’s participation at the Brazil 2014 world Cup.

Briefing the Commission on the kind of support the GNPC offered the Black Stars ahead of the World Cup, Mr Mould mentioned that his outfit had paid the GFA transportation and accommodation fees for some international matches, including the Black Stars matches against South Korea and Holland.

The comment appeared to shock members of the Commission, who pointed out that friendly matches for the Black Stars were arranged and fully paid for by FIFA-licenced agents.

The GNPC’s disclosure, the Commission said, was an indication that the GFA was paid twice for arranging those friendly matches.

Asked if the GNPC was happy to pay the GFA for friendly matches that had already been paid for, Mould said his outfit was not aware that the friendly matches had been paid for.

He said: “I will be surprised that they will be receiving money for matches that we are paying for. And I think that there should be full disclosure.

“I don’t think we would have a problem with it if they were receiving monies because if they gave us an explanation that they were using it for other events and its part of their revenue, I think it’s a justification that we would be able to accept. But I think there should be full disclosure.”
