Ebusua Dwarfs coach JE Sarpong has lashed out at Maxwell Konadu for accepting to stay on as Black Stars coach despite the dismissal of his former boss Kwesi Appiah, claiming it could be interpreted as ‘a stab in the back’.
Sarpong, who is known for speaking his mind on national issues, feels Konadu’s decision to remain at the helm of affairs betrays his loyalty to his former Kotoko teammate.
Appiah was sacked two weeks ago despite guiding the Black Stars to amass four points from six in the qualifying campaign for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Ghana captain selected Maxwell Konadu as his assistant when he landed the top job and the veteran trainer says Konadu should have quit the job to show solidarity with his ‘friend’. “I don’t think the best thing for Maxwell was to stay on after Kwesi was fired,” he told Peace FM, “He should have also left the post in solidarity because when you stay on it gives an impression you stabbed him in the back.
“Of all the coaches in Ghana, he (Kwesi Appiah) selected you as his assistant and so if he has been treated unfairly and you decide to stay on, that’s obviously not the best. It’s like stabbing him in the back.
“Both of them were teammates at Kotoko and so I didn’t expect him (Konadu) to stay on.”
Konadu will supervise the country’s 2015 African Cup of Nations two-legged ties against Guinea next month.
