Asamoah Gyan’s absence in Ghana’s last two training sessions has been the main subject of discussion here among both locals and neutrals, ahead of this evening’s all stakes semi final clash involving the Black Stars and the host nation.
The pacy forward christened “Baby jet” by many of his supporters for his singing talents, was last seen in public while limping off the Estadio de Malabo pitch with hands akimbo, after coming off worse in a contact situation that also involved Guinea goalkeeper Naby Yattara during the quarter final contest between the two teams on Sunday evening.
The 29-year-old forward later required support from the team’s medical staff to board the team bus after the match.
Ghana coach Avram Grant confirmed his star player had suffered a “serious looking” pelvic injury that requires further tests and treatment but refused to discuss his availability in the team’s matches, whilst suggesting that Yattara should be held responsible.
“We are (were) leading 3-0 at the time so there is no need for such a challenge. The goalkeeper (Yattara) should not play football for a very long time,” the former Chelsea FC coach told journalists after Monday’s training session.
It could not be established with Gyan, whose team lost the only match of this tournament that he didn’t feature in, would play any part in today’s contest, even as one Ghanaian based in Malabo who sat next to me during the session suggested his compatriots could be playing mind games with this situation.
