Former President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Mr. Ebo Quansah says Government’s White Paper on the 2014 World Cup Committee Report is to shield former Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah for the 2016 general elections.

According to him, Afriyie-Ankrah is being shielded because he played a key role as Campaign Coordinator in the 2012 presidential elections and won victory for President John Mahama.

Ebo Quansah noted that because Afriyie-Ankrah’s service is needed again in the crucial upcoming 2016 general elections, the government is keeping him in government to to use him again.

The Ghanaian Veteran Sports Journalist was speaking Monday evening on Adom FM’s Burning Issues Program with Afia Pokua aka Vim Lady, which was also transmitted live on Asempa FM.

After Ghana’s worst ever performance at a World Cup was over, President Mahama removed Afriyie-Ankrah and brought him to the Flagstaff House as a Minister of State.

After the Brazil 2016 tournament, President Mahama set up a Commission of Inquiry chaired by Appeals Court Judge Justice Senyo Dzamefe to look into what caused Ghana’s poor showing at the football fiesta.

The commission submitted a report to the President after its work.

The Government recently released a White Paper on the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Ghana's participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah Oppong after receiving the White Paper on the report revealed that government has accepted the recommendations to surcharge all names that had been associated with malpractices from the beginning to the end of the World Cup.

The report however is silent on most of the roles played by Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, whose evidence before the three-member Commission generated public uproar.

Ebo Quansah said the purpose of the Government’s White Paper is only intended to protect the President’s close associates.

“Why [is it that] Afriyie Ankrah who was the head of government’s delegation in Brazil is not being held accountable for the fiasco surrounding Brazil 2014?” Ebo Quansah asked.

Ebo Quansah also expressed worry over why Government’s White Paper was released two weeks before the contents of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry report was made public.

Astute Ghanaian Sports Journalist, Osei Owusu-Bempah, also expressed similar sentiments as Ebo Quansah.
