Andre Ayew wants Ghanaians to renew their relationship with the Black Stars after captaining the team to reach the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon at the weekend.
There is a lack of enthusiasm for the team from fans after the 2014 FIFA World Cup fiasco where the players boycotted training sessions because of unpaid bonuses. Ayew scored the first goal as Ghana beat Mauritius 2-0 in Port Louis but the Swansea star is concerned about the apathy towards the team.
“I think going to a Nations Cup demands a lot. First of all, we need our fans behind us. We need the Ghanaians to support us,” he told Joy Sports on Sunday afternoon.
“If there is anything that has disturbed them, they should forgive us. We are pleading with them and we need them to back us up because before the AFCON, we have the World Cup qualifiers,” he went on, hours after the team sealed a seventh straight AFCON berth. “So we have important games coming up and without our home people, without our brothers and sisters, or fathers and aunties, I think it is going to be difficult.
“So I am pleading with every Ghanaian to forgive us for whatever has happened."
