Veteran writer and president of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Kwabena Yeboah has bemoaned the high rate at which corruption is gaining prominence in Ghanaian football.

Speaking at the 42nd edition of the annual Sports Writers Association of Ghana Awards, Mr. Yeboah who is also President of the association expressed worry over how football in the country has been saddled with corruption lately.

According to him, the canker has reduced the integrity of football in the country and needs to be looked at urgently.

He charged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to confront the issue with all seriousness rather than resorting to the ostrich-like approach in an effort to resolve it.

He cited the recent ban imposed on highly rated Ghanaian referee, Joseph Lamptey by FIFA to corroborate his assertion that corruption in Ghana football is reaching its peak.

“Our football is badly weakened by corruption. The corruption is a result of greed and irresponsibility on the part some and also our collective failure in confronting the canker. Bribery is becoming a nerve-centre of this beautiful sport which is sad to relate”.

“FIFA’s ban of one our referees on acts that borders on pure dirt should awaken us. GFA cannot continue to play the ostrich particularly as the Ghana Premier League reaches the second round”, Kwabena Yeboah lamented.

The 42nd SWAG awards night is an annual event organized by SWAG to reward distinguished personalities for their contribution to the development of sports in Ghana. The 2017 edition of SWAG was held on Saturday May 27 at the Banquet Hall, State House in Accra.

Former Black Stars defender Tony Baffoe received the Sports Personality of the year award and the 2015/2016 Ghana Premier League champions; Wa All Stars team were crowned Male Football Club of the year.

Veteran defender Dan Quaye and former Black Stars player, Godwin Attram also received awards for their dedication to football.
