Accra Great Olympics And WaterAid Ghana Commence 'Play For Health' Covid-19 Project

Accra Great Olympics and WaterAid Ghana have signed a partnership to use football as a tool for community engagement to drive behavior change around Covid-19 prevention protocols.

The programme will target coastal communities in Accra and Tema.

The first outreach was conducted at Chorkor on Sunday, 18th April 2021.

The Accra Great Olympics team was led by Ato Coleman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and included Great Olympics legend and 1982 Nations Cup Goal king, George Alhassan; deputy team captain, Maxwell Abbey Quaye among other players, the technical team, as well as Great Olympics supporters who reside in Chorkor and were selected as community volunteers.

WaterAid Ghana was led by Joseph Appiah, Head of Business Development and supported by Robert Bruce.

The joint team conducted street to street and door to door messaging, engaged taxi drivers and distributed face masks, sanitisers, T-shirts and baseball caps to the community including the Chorkor Police station.

The purpose of the outreach program was to educate the residents of the community on the Covid-19 prevention protocols.

In his address, Mr. Ato Coleman expressed delight with the turnout and stressed that one of the strategic focus of Great Olympics is to deliver on and off the field and become the most community development centered Premier League team in Ghana Football.

He said the team is aiming for a top four finish in the current 2020/21 league season and expect Great Olympics supporters to comply with Covid-19 protocols when spectators are allowed back into the stadium. 

The vice-Captain of the team, Maxwell Quaye appreciated the support of the fans and appealed to them to comply with the Covid-19 protocols.

Mr. Robert Bruce a representative from WaterAid intimated that his organization’s focus was to ensure communities have access to quality water, sanitation and hygiene as the partnership with Great Olympics is intended to contribute towards the fight to defeat Covid-19.
