Sakumono Wins Bayport Tennis Cup

Sakumono Tennis Club, last Saturday, put up a gritty performance to defeat Volta River Authority Tennis Club(VRA),7-6 in the Bayport Tennis Cup played at the Sakumono Tennis Courts.

In all, 13 games were played with the host winning five singles and two doubles.

The tournament started with the Men’s singles as Yaw Akotuah of VRA ousted Fred Tsye 7-1 . Festus Alhassan however turned the tables around for the Sakumono team with some fabulous plays, spiced with creativity, precision and power in the game against Alfred Okang. Big Godwin Martey maintained the home team's winning streak as he defeated Nortey Lokko 7-6(1). Daniel Oduro also recorded another win for the home team beating Paapa Kwarteng 7-6(6).

In the women’s singles, VRA’s Adwoa Agyakoma lost 7-1 to Faustina Tagoe, whiles home favorite, Tina Yamak, also defeated Serwa Akoto 7-0.

In the doubles events, the presence of the VRA Chairman Samuel Lamptey during the start of the doubles gingered the away team as Captain Alfred Okang and Afatsi Avege defeats Sakumono's Babson/Arnold by 7-2.

Paa Kwarteng and Nii Lokko surpassing Festus C.G Alhassan/Daniel Oduro( Spanky) 7-3. Nana Kum and Yaw Akotua followed suit in their game beating Fred and Donkor 7-4. Samuel Lamptey and Commander Akyaanu also overcoming Frank Tawiah and Felix Maduka 7-2, before Lyod Newton and Emmanuel Akossey wrapped up the doubles for the visitors by defeating Big Godwin Martey and Ben 7-3.

Nii Bortey and Lawson relied heavily on the home support, held onto their serves and broke their opponents Ismailia Lamptey and Ernest Okyere at crucial points in a manner that also inspired compatriots Oliver and Eli Asamoah to beat Maxi Gadegbeku and Okyere Christian 7-3.

The tournament ended with a mixed doubles non-score game between Ruweida Yakubu Lamptey and Jackson Arthur losing to Louise Davies and Ben Klotey 6-4.

Marketing Officer at Bayport savings and loans Abigail Kwarteng said, “Bayport is the best savings and loans company in Ghana and sponsoring this tournament is one of the corporate responsibility of the company”.

Chairman of Sakumono Tennis Club Frank Kpanie Addy in his closing speech said, “All too soon the Bayport Tennis Cup has come to an end. The participants exhibited the spirit of competition and enthusiasm. I am really thankful to you for providing us with some very exciting tennis”.

“This competition filled us with enthusiasm which is a vital change in the cycle of routine. It inspires the participants and spectators. They build physical stamina and teach us to take victories and defeats in our stride. Very important lessons of life are woven into battles. A loser provides a winner a scale of measure of his success” Mr. Kpanie stressed.

Chairman of VRA Tennis Club Samuel Lamptey thanked Sakumono Tennis Club for the warm reception and assured Sakumono tennis club of a return league and a promise to inflict the same defeat to them.
