Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), has said, he would not seek re-election, as his outfit prepares for the next elective congress later in the year.

Mr. Nunno Mensah, who doubles as the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has been at the helm of affairs since 2012 and magnificently transformed the sport, to make it one of the popular disciplines in Ghana, apart from football, boxing and athletics.

In a statement, the astute administrator said, upon broad consultation with certain stakeholders in the weightlifting fraternity, he had decided to seek re-election in the next congress.

He said, "about a week ago, I met members of our junior weightlifting team. I have just had a meeting with members of the senior team too and colleagues, it is with a very heavy heart that, I had to inform them and now all members of the family that, my term as president of the GWF has ended and I do not wish to seek for re-election at our next congress".

"For close to eight months now, I have been looking out and speaking to individuals, who could also come on board to put in their energy, network, time and resources, so we can continue to give hope and future to our young boys and girls.

"Thankfully Mr. Johnson Aboagye (a past President and a Patron), Mr. Jerry Shaib, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Coastal Development Company and a member of the Titans Weightlifting club), Mr Kojo Choi (of the 3 C Weightlifting Club) and a few of our current executives have agreed to come and help to carry on with what we all started," he added.

He assured the federation of any form of support in future and expressed to his Vice President, Mr Isaac Tetteh (TT Brothers), members of the executive board, patrons, coaches, athletes and the media who help propelled the weightlifting to greater heights.

Meanwhile, the GWF is expected to announce a date for their elective congress, which would be held this year to elect new leaders to steer the affairs of the association.
