Lifeline For KATH Maternity Block

The Minister of Health, Alban Bagbin has ordered the site engineer for the maternity block project at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi to move to the construction site immediately. Issuing the order during a tour of the facility, Mr. Bagbin said government wants to start vigorous work on the building which is yet to be completed after 38 years of construction work. The health minister said the engineer, Zhou Fangshui of Cymain Ghana Limited should move fully to the construction site because government has arranged monies to complete the edifice. Mr. Bagbin who took over the health ministry less than a month ago was at the hospital to inspect ongoing projects and learn about difficulties being faced at KATH. Past health ministers have given similar assurances ensuring completion of the project which started in 1974 but were unsuccessful. Bagbin however noted government had already provided GH11million towards the project saying government was sourcing $240million towards its completion. The maternity block project will see massive improvement during his tenure as health minister, he announced. The facility will have 995 beds and 10 operating theaters among other things. When completed, it will help augment the hospitals vision of providing quality health care to patients. Mr. Fangshui told the health minister the maternity block could be fully completed in two years time if government provides the necessary funding.
