Hearts Seize Second Spot Ahead Of Kotoko Clash

Hearts of Oak gave their title chase greater impetus on Sunday after beating Wa All Stars 3-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Glo Premier League. The Phobians have now leapfrogged AshantiGold to second place as the Miners do not play until Thursday and the win will serve as a big boost ahead of next Sunday's meeting with rivals and leaders, Asante Kotoko. Former Ghana regular Laryea Kingston put Hearts in front from the spot when he sent goalkeeper Robert Dabou the wrong way in the 32nd minute. James Abban on the stroke of halftime scored the second goal for Hearts when he connected a shot across from the far post. Hearts finished the opening half 2-0 in front and returned from the break much stronger. But All Stars took control of the game, playing a greater part of the game after the hour mark in the half of the home team. All Stars continued to pile the pressure as they attempted to pull a goal back but they were soon undone when Sadat Karim unleashed a shot from outside the box which went past goalkeeper Dabou to crown a victory for Hearts. Hearts are now 10 points off the top going into the game with Kotoko in Kumasi. Asante Kotoko also went 10 points clear at the summit of the Glo Premier League table after bouncing back from a goal down to beat Wassaman 3-1. The home side pushing to avoid relegation drew first blood at the Tarkwa T&A Park after four minutes through Evans Nyarko. But Kotoko who are chasing their 22nd title and with a big game to come on Sunday against rivals, Hearts of Oak finished the half strongly, scoring two goals before halftime. Ben Acheampong equalised in the 33rd minute and with three minutes before the break, Michael Anaba scored to put Kotoko in front. Kotoko returned from the break leading on the score charts but it was the home side who chased the game. Wassaman pushed for the equaliser to salvage at least a point but it was the Porcupine Warriors who were rewarded when Burkinabe attacker, Sacko Iddrissa scored his debut goal in the league to hand them victory. The result leaves Wassaman rooted at the bottom of the standings with seven matches to finish the season. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Baffour scored a goal in a great display as New Edubiase defeated Ebusua Dwarfs 3-2 on Sunday to move to fourth in the Glo Premier League. Dwarfs drew first blood when Kwame Frimpong scored in the 10th minute but the opener was canceled out four minutes later when Abeiku Ainooson scored. Seidu Bancey put Dwarfs back in front after 35 minutes before the league's top scorer, Baffour, equalised to take his goal tally this season to 18 in 23 games. The game appeared to be coasting for a 2-2 draw when Basit Adams dealt Dwarfs a big blow when he scored in injury time for Edubiase.
