Controversy Over Mills Achievement

The Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Mr Gabby Otchere Darko, and the Deputy Minister of Interior, Mr Kobby Acheampong, locked horns over the weekend debating the performance of the present government led by President John Evans Atta Mills. Whereas the boss of the Danquah Institute argued that President John Evans Atta Mills has had a tremendous opportunity to have an unprecedented impact on the lives of Ghanaians, the Deputy Minister maintained that the achievements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is unparalleled in terms of the provision and improvement in social infrastructure, sound economy and peace and stability throughout the country. Debating the contents of the NDCs Green Book, which outlined achievements by the NDC government, on Joy FMs Newsfile, Mr Otchere Darko said the Mills administration inherited an economy with resources that should have propelled him to institute life-changing projects to the benefit of the populace. According to him, the Mills administration has borrowed more than all the Ghana governments put together since the first republic. But what have they done with the resource(s)? he questioned. Mr Darko continued that half of what contributed to the growth rate was from oil proceeds handed over to the Mills government by the Kufuor administration. Instead of using the resources to improve the lot of Ghanaians, Gabby said the NDC government rather inflated contracts of many projects and that is why more money is chasing fewer achievements. However, Deputy Interior Minister Kobby Acheampong, in a sharp rebuttal to Gabbys submission, said Gabby was exhibiting a lack of contextual intelligence. According to him, the New Patriotic Partys (NPP) argument that the Mills government has had more resources makes no sense. He explained that every government since the first republic has a budget stating its resources and how it intends to spend it. He added that every government in the forth republic has a period of four years and added that the mandate of the NDC government is to deliver according to its promises to the people, which the NDC government has done.
