Ghana's Ban On Foreign Retailers To Be Probed

A delegation from the ECOWAS Parliament of the West African sub regional group is expected to hold a crisis meeting with officials of Ghanas Trade and Industry Ministry over the Ghanaian governments decision to ban foreign retailers from doing retail business in Accra. Ghanas trade laws prohibit foreigners from engaging in small scale businesses until they are able to invest a seed capital of 300,000 dollars. The enforcement of the law has raised concerns among foreigners especially Nigerians who think they are being targeted by the law. Their authorities in Nigeria have subsequently threatened to break diplomatic ties with Ghana if the law is enforced and have petitioned the ECOWAS parliament over the issue. The deputy speaker of the ECOWAS parliament and leader of the delegation, NDC MP Michael Teye Nyaunu in an interview with XYZ News, the issue will be thoroughly discussed this week. The ECOWAS delegation of which I am the leader, have arranged a meeting with the Minister of Trade and Industry. We are going to listen to the sides to get proper briefing Mr. Nyaunu said. The Member of Parliament for the Lower Manya constituency added that a committee has also been sent to come and do the hearing and investigation into this allegation. The ECOWAS committee will be coming down in the course of the week to listen to whatever is going on and see how the issue can be addressed.
