Welcome Onboard

Ghana has marked another important milestone in our political history as a new political grouping is born. The addition of another political grouping, that is to say the coming together of people sharing a common political vision with a view to ultimately capturing power to serve their people is proof of the prevalence of an aspect of democracy. The journey to today has been arduous, the reason for which is not far-fetched. The National Democratic Party (NDP) was formed by a section of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which fell out with the former and the issues emanating from the development are household knowledge. Their ability to break away and form their own party without hindrance only enriches our democratic culture and we think they should be encouraged as should be others who follow their path. We have listened to the concerns raised by a section of Ghanaians about the need to curtail the number of political parties in the country. While we are tempted to side with their position, we are also conscious of the right of the NDP members to form their own political party if they so wish, provided they satisfy the political party laws of the country. From descriptions as a stillborn party to they wont fly, various impediments have been deliberately put on the way of the party but finally, today has come and as you read this piece, the newborn party is being launched in Kumasi. The challenges the party encountered, even a few days before today, have been Herculean but the persevering leadership and members have soldiered on. Politics in the country has never been so interesting. Most people have become observers of the unfolding developments and, as they do, they are making various predictions. It is part of the political growth of the country and we are pleased. We pray that the lessons which go with such experiences will positively dawn on us in the years to come. The visit on former President Jerry John Rawlings by Nana Akufo Addo is one of the new developments in our body-politic which is refreshing. We pray that our country witnesses a new lease of political life in which vindictiveness would give way to political tolerance, devoid of the kind of diabolic manouvres being witnessed in the relationship between the newly born NDP and the NDC. We wish the newly outdoored party the best of luck and Godspeed as they take the first strides of existence in a turbulent and treacherous political terrain.
