IN WHAT could best be described as a snub, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) refused to attend the National Delegates Congress of the NDP which saw ex-First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings being endorsed as the flagbearer of the NDP for the 2012 polls. All the other political parties in the country that were officially invited for the event, including the largest opposition political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), graced the event where their representatives gave a solidarity message. However, the NDC was conspicuously missing in action. The MC for the event, Ernest Owusu Bempah, one after the other, called representatives of the various political parties to the podium to give their solidarity message which they willingly did. But when the MC mentioned the NDC representatives to mount the podium and deliver their solidarity message, nobody from the ruling political party popped up to do so. Even though nobody from the NDC was present at the function, the NDP fans that had filled every available space of the VIP section of the stadium, most of whom had defected from the NDC, seemed unhappy to hear the name of the ruling party. In unison, the irate crowd started yelling on top of their voices �away, away, away,� to display their fury and certainly indicate that they had no business with the NDC anymore and therefore did not need the party at their historic event. Later on after the event, some top guns of the NDP confirmed to Daily Guide that they indeed sent an invitation to the NDC which was addressed to the NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman, Yaw Obimpeh. The paper learnt that the NDC invitation was sent to Joseph Yammin, the NDC secretary in the region. Since the letter was delivered the NDP was expecting the NDC to grace the event but sadly the NDPs hopes were dashed. When contacted, Joseph Yammin confirmed he received the letter from the NDP, pointing out that he received it after 5:00 p.m. on Friday when he had closed from work. According to him, the NDP did not want the NDC to be part of their congress; hence, sending the invitation to the ruling political party some few hours to the event which took place on Saturday. Pushed to the wall about why the NDC in the region could not even send a single person to represent it at the event, Yammin said it was not necessary for the NDC to grace the event. He alleged that the NDP hired known NPP faithful whom they dressed in NDP t-shirts to send signals to the entire country that indeed the NDP was vibrant and had a lot of following �which is wrong.� Yammin said �if I want to address the NPP members that were clad in NDP colours at the stadium I don�t think the NDP congress was the appropriate platform for me to do so.� He said if he wanted to address the NPP members he had several platforms at his disposal to do so, claiming that the NDC�s decision to boycott the congress was not news and that nobody should make hullabaloo about their absence.
