1963 Nations Cup Squad In A Bad State Would Have Fought For Judgement Debt But.

Nana Gyau Gyan III formerly known as Agyeman Gyau a chief of Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region and a former player of the Black Stars has lamented on the way the first squad of the Senior National team to win the Nations Cup trophy have been treated by the nation for the past years. Speaking in an interview on Heroes of the Game a sports programme on Peace FM, Thursday afternoon, he said the 1963 squad have been poorly treated with unfulfilled promises and most members of the squad languishing in poverty. He revealed how the Retired Footballers Association (RFA) were making all efforts to help the old players but no support was coming from the government, leaving them with little to do. However, he cried over how one of the nations finest football heroes, Edward Acquah who scored a brace in the 1963 final against Sudan died last year and was not even given a befitting funeral by the state or recognized in any form. Its very pathetic to see how our heroes have been left to their fate with unfulfilled promises by the state after winning the trophy, how most of the squad members were living in abject poverty.they are in a very bad state, he told Peace Fm. He added that some were seriously sick, like Crentsil, as well as Kwame Adarkwah who now sells at a Provision store which belongs to his brother in Konongo to make ends meet. Most of the players feel bitter in their hearts and its a bad omen for the country. They have been complaining and demanding for their booty for almost 50-years and nothing has been done about it. Some have even suggested we take the government to court to demand our share of the judgment debt, but were withholding it because we believe God in his own time will provide, he stated. The 1963 African Cup of Nations was the fourth edition of the Africa Cup of Nations and was hosted by Ghana. The final in Accra on 1st December saw the host Ghana winning 3-0 against Sudan, after the first half finished 0-0. Goals were scored by Edward Aggrey-Fynn from a spot kick and Edward Acquah now of blessed memory who scored a brace. Some members of the squad were; Wilberforce Mfum, Edward Acquah, Edward Aggrey-Fynn, Agyeman Gyau and Kwame Adarkwah.
