GBC Launches 2013 AFCON Coverage

Ahead of the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has launched its coverage of the biennial soccer fiesta at its head office, Studio 1 in Accra. The event, anchored by Kwabena Yeboah of Sports Highlight�s fame, attracted ex-Black Stars players, Nationwide Supporters Union and all who matter in football. Last Wednesday evening�s occasion saw the station with nationwide coverage rolling out plans for the coverage of the forthcoming Nations Cup. In his address, the Director General of GBC, Berifi Apenteng, noted, �This launching is to inform you, our stakeholders on how we intend to give total coverage to the tournament which is the preserve of Africa, but has the attention of the entire footballing world. �The African Cup of Nations is one event that keeps the entire nation glued to their TV sets and radio sets. As the only station with nationwide coverage, we are promising the entire nation that come January 19 to February 10; we will be giving them a coverage of the nation�s cup which is unprecedented.� �We are also taking this opportunity to announce that effective immediately, sponsorship packages for AFCON 2013 are ready for potential sponsors to take full advantage of,� he added. The GBC boss revealed that his outfit was the sole and exclusive rights holder of the tournament in Ghana, saying, �No other television or radio station outside of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation will have access to the live broadcasts of the tournament.� He added, �This therefore provides a unique opportunity to advertisers since you do not have to talk to multiple operators of media apart from GBC, bearing in mind that we still are the only station with nationwide coverage. �Indeed, for the past one year or so, we have positioned to be the sports content leader for GTV Sports Plus with support from GTV and we intend to continue that way.� Ex-Black Stars players comprising those from the past generation- Rev. Osei Kofi, Dan Owusu, Awulye Quaye- and those belonging to the recent past generation of Yaw Preko, Nii Odartey Lamptey, Augustine Arhinful and Laryea Kingston, in separate words, pledged their support for the Stars and cautioned them to eschew complacency. Ghana is drawn in Group B with DR Congo, Mali and Niger.
