John Mensah Set To Replace John Boye At Rennes

French side Rennes are pondering a swoop for Ghana defender John Mensah as a cover for his compatriot John Boye who is heading to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Mensah is reportedly set to make a comeback to his former club, who seek his services following the expected departure of center-back, John Boye. Boye is set to feature for Ghana in the 2013 African Cup of Nations, and would be unavailable for Rennes for six weeks if the Black Stars reach the final. The Rennes-based club is performing quite well this season, and the squad is in perfect shape. However, the departure of Boye would leave a loophole in the defence. Rennes are on the lookout for a possible replacement for the 25-year-old, one who could fill the position for the departing centre-back. The Ghanaian international has featured in 14 games for the French club this season, and is considered to be an essential member of the squad. Mensah has played for Les Rouge-et-Noirs before, and is a considered to be a preferred option by the Ligue 1 outfit. The defender had spent two successful seasons with the club, and was considered to be a prized-asset by the Rennes-based club before his departure to Olympique Lyonnais for a fee of 8 million. The former Ghana international has made nearly 60 appearances for the French side and had also scored a couple of goals during his tenure at the Route de Lorient. The Obuasi-born players career went in to a slump since his departure from the club, followed by unsuccessful stints with Les Gones, and later on with English Premier League side, Sunderland AFC. Since then, the center-back has been unable to find himself a break-through to play for a top tier club. The former Olympique Lyonnais player would cherish the opportunity to player for his former club. The player has been reportedly training in Rennes for a few weeks now. It seems like the 30-year-old has convinced the administration that he can fulfill Boyes role during his absence, and perhaps even find himself a starting spot in the future as well.
