GFA Marks 12th Anniversary of Stadium Tragedy

The Ghana Football Association and the football community are today marking the 12th anniversary of the country's worst football stadium tragedy. On 9 May 2001, 126 supporters lost their lives on a Wednesday evening while attending a league match between rivals, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the at the Ohene Djan Stadium, now Accra Sports Stadium in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. The GFA commiserates with the bereaved families, share their grief and pray for solace as the entire nation moves on steadily while trying to erase the scars of the tragedy. Also the GFA has reminded stakeholders to ensure stadium safety and a call on all to be guided by the unfortunate past event. On the eve of the 12th anniversary, the football governing body directed that a minute�s silence be observed during the midweek matches in the the country. Ghanaian Police officers fired tear gas into the stand in their efforts to control rioting Kotoko fans after Hearts overturned a one-goal deficit to lead 2-1 rather ended the lives of 126 fans who were crashed to death while attempting to escape.
