Chelsea 2 Everton 1...Benitez Signs Off As Chelsea Manager With A Victory

RAFA BENITEZ signed off as Chelsea manager with a victory at Stamford Bridge. After the Blues' midweek Europa League final victory over Benfica, some fans brought banners to thank their unpopular interim boss. And his fellow Spaniard Juan Mata gave Chelsea the lead with a seventh-minute strike. However, Everton equalised just eight minutes later through Steven Naismith. But Fernando Torres netted a 75th-minute winner to cement Chelsea's third-place finish. The match also signalled the end of David Moyes' time as Toffees boss before he heads to replace Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. His side got off to the worst possible start as Demba Ba's fierce shot was only parried by Tim Howard into the path of Mata. He made no mistake from close range as he tapped home his 20th goal of the season. But Everton hit back when Naismith exchanged a one-two with Victor Anichebe and dinked over Petr Cech to level. Darron Gibson then struck the post with a long-range striker in frantic spell for the visitors. And just before half-time Steve Pienaar's effort was cleared off the line as Chelsea held on. After the break, the home side started well and Gary Cahill was denied by Howard before Frank Lampard fired over. They were also holding firm at the back and when Torres struck, there was no way back for Moyes' men.
