Fake Doctor In Police Custody

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A) Sanitation and Motor Court presided over by His Worship, Mr Emmanuel Nana Antwi-Barima, has remanded in police custody a phone repairer, Nana Kofi Boakye, who posed as Dr. Batistuta Owusu Boakye, of Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Boakye used his impersonation to dupe a female shop assistant at Abeka Lapaz in Accra, Charity Karikari to the tune of GH 2,800.00 under the pretence of assisting her to gain admission in a nursing training institute. According to the prosecutor of this case, Inspector H. Ansah, in April this year, the accused person, Nana Kofi Boakye went to charitys shop to buy clothes for his personal use. In a conversation, Nana Boakye asked charity her educational background and she said she was a Senior High School graduate. The prosecutor told the court that, Nana Boakye introduced himself as a medical doctor at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and that he will be able to admit charity into a nursing training institution if only the lady is interested. Three days later, Nana Boakye went to the complainants (charity) shop and demanded and collected GH2,000 from her. Boakye not satisfied allegedly called charity to add GH1,500 for him to purchase a laptop for her to use during the training. Prosecution told the court that at this stage, charity became suspicious and quickly reported the matter to the police. Prosecution further stated that on May 12, 2013, Boakye was expected to meet charity for the laptop fee to be given to him. He continued that Boakye showed up but on seeing police in uniform around he took to his heels but luck however eluded him and the police grabbed him. He said the police took his caution statement in which he admitted the offence before being processed for trial. Judge Nana Antwi-Barima noted that due to the potent nature of the accused persons criminal antics even though he pleaded not guilty in court, the investigator through prosecution conspicuously exhibited evidence against the fake doctor, and also showed evidence of his previous criminal records well as this fresh one. The Judge said prosecution led evidence to proof beyond reasonable doubt that the fake doctor presented himself to convince charity that he is a doctor and a managed to collect GH 2,800.00 from her. His Worship stressed that pivoting on the above and flowing from the adduced facts by prosecution, in the open court that the accused person had earlier on jumped bail in the same criminal charge at the police headquarters and therefore there is the need for the fake doctor to assist police in further police investigation, court orders that he should be remanded in police custody. Nana Boakye is to reappear in court on May 29, 2013.
