Stop Taking Bribes From New Teachers - Chief

Nana Ansah Sasraku, paramount chief of Mamfe, has expressed disgust about the attitude of some officers at the Controller and Accountant Generals Department (CAGD) who are alleged to be demanding money from newly recruited teachers working in deprived areas before working on their salaries. He said some teachers posted to the rural areas have complained to him about the negative attitude of the CAGD officers who request for 35% to 45% of their salaries before processing their salaries. This act is criminal; those guilty should desist from the act and the appropriate authorities should ensure that these young teachers get their pay, the chief said. Nana Sasraku was speaking as the Chair of this years Eastern Regional Education Review held in Koforidua on Friday. He said chief said teachers were the pivot of the nations development and that without them the country could not have had the professionals who run its affairs, adding, We therefore need to make them happy to sacrifice for the welfare of our future leaders but not discourage them. Presenting the Performance Review Report, Mr Godfred Dzeke, Regional Education Management Information System Officer, said even though more teachers have been employed we still need more. Mr Dzeke said it was unfortunate the number of technical and vocational teachers was fast dwindling. He was grateful to the government for completing most of the classrooms started by the previous administration, a result of which the region now has more classrooms to accommodate more pupils.
