The Convention People�s Party has no problem with its sole Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Mr Amadu Moses Yahaya, deciding to join the Majority side in Parliament, and to do business with them, the party�s Communication Director, Nii Armah Akomfrah, has explained. He explained that Mr Yahaya�s decision to align himself with the Majority side was merely for convenience purposes and nothing else, saying �there is no confusion in the CPP�. In Parliament, MPs can either belong to the Majority or Minority side since the structure pertaining does not give room for neutrality, Nii Akomfrah explained to the Daily Graphic in an interview yesterday. Mr Yahya was officially sworn in as MP last Tuesday but soon after that he told journalists that he would align himself with the Majority side of the house. Mr Yahaya won the Kumbungu seat which became vacant after the incumbent, Alhaji Muhammed Mumuni, vacated the seat to take up an international appointment. He polled 13,029, representing 51 per cent of the total votes cast to beat his closest challenger, Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu of the NDC who polled 11,896, representing 47.28 per cent of the total votes cast. His position is contrary to the one taken by the Chairperson of the party, Ms Samia Yaaba Nkrumah, who chose to belong to the Minority NPP side as the then CPP MP for Jomoro during the Fifth Parliament of the Fourth Republic. Mr Yahaya told journalists that he chose to be with the Majority side after consultations with "a vast majority of my constituents at the grassroots". But Nii Akomfrah explained that �the party feels we are in opposition and it should have been ideal for our sole MP to sit with the opposition and do business with the opposition.� Nevertheless, he insisted �if our sole MP thinks he should sit with the Majority and that sits down well with his constituents; then we have no problem with that decision�. Speaking to Citi News, Madam Rhodaline Imoro Ayana also reiterated that the CPP did not find it strange that Mr Yahya, MP for Kumbungu Constituency, had joined the Majority side in Parliament. According to her, �he decided that joining the majority would best suit his constituents.� She indicated that the MP took the decision in consultation with the elders of his constituency and leaders of the CPP. The party�s National Chairperson, Samia Nkrumah, speaking to Citi News also argued that the CPP was an independent party and should not take sides in Parliament. �We are not with the opposition and we are not with the ruling party. We want to have the freedom to continue to express our political views,� she said. She also indicated that the people of Ghana were the party�s main interest and priority. �We want to give the people of Ghana the truth; we want to be able to speak our minds, and we want to have the freedom to make decisions better in line with our political role,� she said. Asked whether he had consulted the leadership of the CPP on his decision to join the Majority side, the MP for Kumbungu told journalists that the leadership of the CPP would abide by the decision of the people of Kumbungu who "have advised me to belong to the Majority side". " I will, however, support policies which are in the interest of country and my constituents," he declared.
