Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Maxwell Kofi Jumah says the foundation of the rule of law has been shaken by the decision of the judges of the Supreme Court to dismiss the Presidential Election Petition. He claims the electorate have lost confidence in the judiciary. The petition was filed by the NPP 2012 presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and party chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey to challenge the legitimacy of President John Mahama. After 48 days of hearing, the nine-member justices on Thursday, August 29, 2013 affirmed John Mahama as a �validly� elected president of the 2012 election. The petitioners, though disappointed with the verdict, accepted it and have said they won�t seek for a review. But Kofi Jumah, speaking on Okay FM�s Ghana Decides program said he is saddened by the ruling. According to him, the judges� decision has silenced Ghanaians who witnessed proceedings live on television; particular, the admissions which were made by Dr. Afari Gyan and the respondents. "I am very disappointed by the verdict [because] I think there was a miscarriage of justice," he stated. He found it is intriguing that the Supreme Court will dismiss the petition after the NPP, armed with incontrovertible evidence, and was able to prove there were massive irregularities in the 2012 polls. The former Asokwa MP feared Ghanaians may no longer have confidence in seeking justice at the courts given the outcome of the petition; reiterating that the next election will witness any �ways and means� to win power since all that matters in every election is power and not the rules which govern the election. An enraged Kofi Jumah, overwhelmed by the judgment of the nine justices, said he leaves everything for posterity to judge; averring that �foundation of the rule of law has been shaken by the decision of the judges to dismiss the petitioners� case.
