Reports reaching the Daily Searchlight have it that one of the key educational agencies of government, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET) is currently in serious financial crises making it difficult for the agency to be run. A source close to COTVET told this paper that for the past two months official vehicles have not been fueled due to its bankruptcy adding �even toilet roll; there are none in the wash rooms� they have resorted to newspapers for cleaning after visiting the washrooms�. The source said as an agency under the Ministry of Education, COTVET has not received any money from the ministry since the beginning of the year and that has made it difficult for the management of the agency to run it. �Every year there is a budget allocation for the agencies under the Ministry which COTVET is one of such agencies to help in the day to day activities but this year no such thing has been received,� the source added. COTVET is a national body set up by an Act of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana. It is to co-ordinate and oversee all aspects of technical and vocational education and training in the country. Currently much of its activities are taken up by the controversial GYEEDA program. Its major objective is to formulate policies for skills developments across the broad spectrum of per-tertiary and tertiary education, formal, informal and non-formal sectors. COTVET aims at establishing Ghana�s Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the skilled workforce and raise the income generating capacities of people, especially women and low income groups through provision of quality-oriented, industry-focused and competency-based training programmes and complementary services.
