A political analyst, Dr. Samuel Adu Gyamfi has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to elect the 2012 Flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party�s Flagbearer for the 2016 general elections.
�I can tell you that, although some people might not understand some of these issues, in 2016 it will be so glaring and so clear that Nana Addo Dankwa�s candidature will be a flop, it will send the party back paddling and it will be a sign of reverse button instead of a progressive button� Dr. Gyamfi stated.
According to him, the Asante/Akyem hegemony being played by the NPP should be stopped because �it would stifle the growth of the NPP" adding that "if the NPP is not careful to open itself up and still hold on to certain old and archaic traditions, hanging and hovering around the Asante/Akyem hegemony, then I would want to tell you that the party would continue to have a certain divisiveness within its rank.�
Speaking to Citi FM�s Richard Dela Sky, on Eyewitness News, Dr. Gyamfi stated that �it will only be a shock, political surprise or upset to really see the Nana Addo-Dankwa candidature winning 2016 election.�
Because, �what is at stake is that, Ghanaians are becoming all encompassing. They would want a party that is all embracing. They would want a candidate that seems to cut across. They would want to relate with somebody who really is not coming from a kind of hegemony class� he maintained.
He revealed that from Ghana�s past elections since 1992, �you will realize that Ex President Rawlings enjoyed the Presidency for two terms, he was retained and then he went again. Then in 2000, you had President Kufour come to power and in 2008 you had the late President Mills come to power. Though he did not finish his term before he was called to glory, you would understand that it was a continuation of assignment for our recent President who won the 2012 elections � it will only be a shock or political surprise or upset to really see the Nana Addo-Dankwa candidature winning 2016 election.�
He was of the view that although many believe that Nana Addo�s nomination during the primaries would be �water tight� that would not guarantee the party any victory in the 2016 elections.
He called on the stakeholders of the party to build a formidable force by overhauling the party and expanding it to embrace everyone instead of the Asante/Akyem hegemony.
