Pure Water Prices To Go Up

Pure water prices are expected to go up on the 1st October 2013 following the increase in utility prices by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC). The President of Sachet and Bottled Water Producers Association, Mr. Magnus Nunoo in an interview on Eyewitness News confirmed the decision. Water is our basic raw material, and having gone up by 52% it is quite significant and looking at power which is almost 79% is also very significant, so there is a need for us to let these things reflect in the pricing of our products he said. He also explained that the plastic materials used for the packaging constitute about 50% of the cost of production. We have had significant devaluing of our products which has affected the packaging materials all this time. We were just waiting for this tariff to come up so that we can come out with a reasonable change in prices he added. According to him, the immediate reason why the association decided to increase the prices of their products stems from the increase in water tariffs by the PURC. The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) on Wednesday announced an increase in utility prices following calls by utility providers to have it increased. Mr. Mr. Nunoo further stated that a sachet of water "selling at 10 pesewas would be sold at 15 pesewas" while a bag of water would be sold at "1.80 pesewas from the truck and 2.20 pesewas from the stores.
