Whether Or Not We Pay Tariff Increment Is A Matter Of Choice - Allotey Jacobs

My advice to Ghanaian workers and Ghanaians in general is that; indeed the tariff increment is affecting everybody but it is a matter of choice: either we help expand our electricity network, refurbish our old sub-stations or we will get a system collapse because we have decided not to paythat is a matter of choice for Ghanaians, says Central Regional Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress. The former Board member of the Electricity Company of Ghana was reacting to the hikes in electricity and water tariffs announced by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC). According to him, Ghanaians have the right and option to say that they will not pay the 78.9% (electricity) and 52% (water) increment, however, that choice might lead to the collapse of the countrys electricity network system. Allotey Jacobs indicated that electricity is the backbone of the economy and so we only need to help in making our electricity system effective Some time ago, we used to incessant experience power outages; all those things were warning signals for uswe need money to inject into our electricity network system. And that is why I am pleading but the choice is ours, he said on Wednesdays edition of Kokrokoo. Speaking to the same issue and on the same platform, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC said the tariff increments were unavoidable. It is unfortunate that this is happening but it was inevitable because most of our systems are on the verge of collapse... he indicated.
