First Lady calls for men's support

Mrs Lordina Mahama, Ghana's First Lady, has called on men to support their women in the fight against HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and cervical cancer. She has also urged men to encourage their women to go for regular checkups for early detection and prevention of those diseases. Mrs Mahama who spoke during a health screening programme for the people of Oyoko, near Koforidua on Saturday, urged all Ghanaians to know their HIV status and to ensure that their families were also free from the disease. "If you test positive, quickly seek help and protect your partner and if you test negative, you can live safe and make sure that your entire family is safe from HIV", she advised. The First Lady pledged her readiness to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that Ghana rose above HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancers. She expressed her appreciation to the Ghana AIDS Commission for working hard to ensure that HIV/AIDS prevalence was reduced in the country. Nana Kodua Kessie II, Chief of Oyoko, congratulated the First Lady for her commitment to the fight against HIV and other diseases which usually affected women more. He appealed to head teachers to desist from charging unapproved fees in schools but rather stick to rates prescribed by the Ghana Education Service for new entrants into Senior High Schools. Inhabitants of the town were tested for HIV, breast cancer, cervical cancer, syphilis and other medical conditions by health officials from the Koforidua Regional Hospital.
