The chief contribution of the Ghanaian people to the progress of mankind has been to work out a system whereby ordinary men and women of our great land can take a hand in business of governing their country. The system we are operating with parliament acting as the second most important institution of our governance structure, was not invented overnight. It is the product of a long period of evolution and struggle, reaching back many years of eventful history. Our parliament act as the conduit for citizens of more than one social class to speak their mind about the grievance of the day, to influence the making of laws and to keep an eye on the way in which public money has been raised or spent. Mr Speaker, we were witnesses to what transpired on the floor of parliament today and the Joint Forum For Progressive Socialists through this Press Statement will like to express our deepest worry and shock at the way the MP for Adansi Asokwa Constituency Mr K.T Hammond, carried himself on the floor on the 4th day of December 2013 responding to submission by Honourable Benjamin Kumbuor on corruption Mr Speaker, it is hard to give a precise estimate of effect of parliament on the other sectors of our governance structure though its role is best understood by regarding it not primarily as a check on the executive, but as one of the institutions through which the government operate. With this huge responsibility, we expect members of Parliament to be people who are morally and intellectually astute. What we saw and heard on the floor of the house on this day isn't representative of what we demand of our parliamentarians, a sharp departure from the basic ethics of the legislature which was unfortunate and disgraceful considering the enviable image the house command on the continent. We are calling for immediate action to be taken against Mr K.T Hammond to serve as deterrent to others who may be thinking of going on similar rampage. We don't think just expunging the statement from records of the house or just apologizing can cure the serious damage this reckless and emotional incompetence has caused the august house. We hope our request would be considered to help sanitize the political stables.
