A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ken Kuranchie says the setting up of a Judgement Debt Commission �is an excuse by the sitting administration which has been responsible for the judgement debts to buy time.� According to him, Ghanaians are aware of the causes of judgment debt and therefore the country does not �need a Commission�. Sharing his thoughts on the progress so far being made by the Judgment Debt Commission, Mr. Kuranchie who is also the Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper stated that �this whole year that we are using to study judgement debts, is a year that we should have used to take action.� He recalled that the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Martin Amidu on his own volition, took the necessary steps to ensure the judgment debts paid to Isofoton SA, Waterville and Alfred Woyome were recovered by the state. �A private individual, Martin Amidu, went to court on his own volition and said that this was wrong, this money should be recovered and got a Supreme Court judgement allowing the money to be recovered,� he said. Mr. Kuranchie maintained that government �is not taking any action and then government tells me that it has set up a Commission.� He asked: �We paid GHC10 million to a chief who turned out not to even exist. Who approved those payments? What has been done to those people who approved those payments? Who agreed that we should go and pay some chief from Akwamu or wherever that amount of money; a person that we cannot even identify today?� He, therefore, charged government not to waste any more time in setting up judgment debts commissions, but should take the needed action to retrieve monies paid and prosecute persons involved with such payments.
