NPP National Congress To Cost GHC 700,000

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will need an amount of GHC686,900 to organise its National delegates congress scheduled for March 1, 2014. An interim budget seen by citifmonline.com indicates that the party already has GHC 466,500 in its coffers but will have to raise an additional GHC 220, 400 to enable the leadership organise the delegates congress. According to the budget which is to be submitted at NPP executive council meeting later on Tuesday, the existing funds identified for the event comes from National Executive sources and arrears from MPs contributions. There have been news reports alleging that the party is broke and might not be able to organise a successful congress. The General Secretary of the party, George Owusu Afriyie has also reportedly told the supporters that the only way the party can afford to organise a congress will be to decentralise the process. The NPP has a tradition where all the delegates converge on one venue for their national congress but the cost of this year�s congress has become the source of controversy for the party. The national delegates congress will be the venue for the election when national executives and a presidential candidate for the 2016 general elections. The cost of the congress is not the only thorny issue the party leadership is struggling with, there have been reports of splits within the leadership and supporters over possible flagbearer candidates as well conduct of the elections.
