It still remains a fact that the Akan tribe is the largest ethnic group in Ghana; but when it comes to national elections, individual political preferences makes it impossible for one major political party to claim ownership of votes coming from the Akan tribes. For the very first time, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were heard boasting of increasing their votes in the Ashanti Region; believed to be the stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after the 2012 general elections had ended. This therefore displaces assertions by senior members of the NPP who have bought into the NDC�s propaganda that the party is an Akan based party, Mr. Amoako Tuffour has observed. He was reacting to Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe�s concern about the composition of the vetting committee of the NPP. He is reported to have said in an interview with the 'Daily Graphic' that the composition of the committee is 85% Akan and this reinforces the perception that the party is Akan dominated. But in an interview with OKAY FM, Mr. Tuffour remarked that the onus solely lied on the party leaders to select people fit to be on the vetting committee. He explained that as to how the committee members are selected, it remains an internal party decision. He proceeded to roll out undisputable facts to prove that since the inception of the NPP, people who have led the party have come from different tribes. According to him, �the first person to be made Chairman of the New Patriotic Party was the late Mr. Bernard Joao da Rocha, who was a Fante. After him came the late Peter Ala Adjetey, a Ga. Peter Mark Manu was the only person considered an Ashanti and after his tenure Mr. Harunah Esseku, a Fante took over. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey is a Ga and he is our current leader and Chairman�. He therefore scoffed at the Akan-dominant allegation and urged people not to buy into the tribal cards being played against the NPP.
