The New Patriotic Party (NPP), since its inception, has always had a growing variance of opinion with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). NPP faithfuls have proven to be the major opposition to the NDC and vice-versa. In fact, it is almost impossible to find the NPP jaw-jawing with its bitterest political rival on any economic issue. In 2000, the NPP administration led by Ex-President John Agyekum Kufour took over the Presidency after a fierce battle to oust the NDC government. But in 2008, the tables turned and the late President John Evans Atta Mills and his Vice, now President of the fourth Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama showed the NPP the exit from the seat of Government. This trend seemed to have continued and Ghana is yet to see the day that the NPP will give thumbs up to the National Democratic Congress over policies and initiatives it implements. It is in this respect that the Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, admonished the ruling NDC to remain focused and not be distracted by the actions of the members of the NPP. According to him, no matter what the NDC government does, the NPP will always ensure that they (NDC) do not succeed. Speaking on Radio Gold's "Alhaji and Alhaji" programme, he explained that the NPP's obligation is to make the government of the day unpopular and there's nothing the ruling party can do to change the posture of the NPP. He insisted that so far as the NPP remains on the opposition bench, it definitely "has no obligation to appreciate what government does. The NPP has no obligation to make government look better. The NPP has no obligation to make government succeed. The NPP is completely for power.� And to him, once power has not yet been handed over to the NPP, �what the NDC as a government ought to realize is the fact that it also has to determine its own strategy. Its own terrain for combat and to do the things that will make people realize that the agitation from opposition has no merit�If people in government are doing their work, they will not be worried about some of the agitations and some of the comments� which to him, are �totally baseless.� He therefore advised the Mahama administration to work hard to improve the economy.
