Local Organising Committee For BCI Ghana Walk For The Cure 2014 Lauched

The First Local Organising Committee has been launched at the Sunyani Coronation Park Conference Hall in Sunyani for the BCI GHANA WALK FOR THE CURE, 2014. This year�s Walk is scheduled to take place in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. In view of that, a Local Organising Committee Meeting was held on Monday June 9, 2014 in Sunyani to plan the oraganisation for the walk. The LOC involves stakeholders such as the Sunyani Cordinating Council, Municipal Assembly, Regional House of Chiefs, Security Agencies, Regional Health Directorate, Regional Education Directorate, National Sports Council, KeepFit Clubs, National Ambulance Service, Market Women, Media and others. At the meeting, Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, who is the Chair for the BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure introduced the event to the audience. She mentioned that, the Walk is the country�s largest and most successful education event for breast cancer, which was started in 2011. She said, the past three Walks held in Kumasi and Accra in 2011, 2012 and 2013 attracted 13,000, 20,000 and 30,000 participants respectively. This year�s event is expected to attract over 30,000 participants from all over the country. Several international participants will also join the Walk. The Ghana Walk for the Cure presented by Breast Cancer Awareness Creation and Research Organization, Breast Care International (BCI), is open to the general public. Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, President of BCI and Chief Executive Officer of Peace And Love Hospitals, note that: �our organization thought it timely to start the Walk series, as we believe that in our own inimitable and special Ghanaian way, we could contribute to raising awareness on this disease, which affects us all in varying degrees - women, men and children. This event would focus on a serious issue-preventing the untimely death from breast cancer. However, we aim to have fun in the process. Highlights at the end of the walk would include a concert and glimpses into the lives of some cancer survivors�. She explained that the organisation of the main event include a walk through principal streets of Sunyani. Participants will converge at the sports stadium where speeches are delivered, followed screening, musical shows and fun events. Dr. Wiafe received congratulatory messages from the audience, Nana Adu Mantaka, for the global recognition she has received following her pioneering role in initiating the campaign on breast cancer prevention, treatment and awareness creation. Suggestion was made by most of the stakeholder. The representative from the Sunyani Coordinating Council, Madam Theresa Adjei Mensah on behalf of the Sunyani Cordinating Council and othe stakeholders assured Dr. Wiafe and her team that they will support this year�s event and believes it will be a memorable one. Nana Adu Mantaka who is the Technical Director mentioned various roles each stakeholder will play at the event. He said the starting point and route for the walk would be decided at subsequent LOC meetings. Madam Akosua Adjapong, the Breast Cancer Ambassador and a member of the Sponsorship Team, appealed to members of the LOC to make suggestions for public spirited companies and individuals to be contacted for sponsorship. Dr. Wiafe Addai thanked the audience for their participation and their pledges of support towards this year�s event.
