Ho Begins House-To-House Campaign Against Cholera

Environmental Health Officers in Ho have begun a house-to-house sensitization campaign against possible outbreak of cholera in the Municipal area. We do not have any case now but we have challenges. We still have issues of open defecation and waste management challenges and cannot relax, Mr Richard Ahiagbede, Ho Municipal Environmental Health Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Tuesday. He said the focus of the house-to-house campaign was on personal and environmental cleanliness and aimed at intensifying preparation against any outbreak. Mr Ahiagbede said his outfit lacked logistics to address sanitation challenges in the Municipal area and therefore decided to move from house to house to engage households in the mornings and late afternoons to sensitize them on cleanliness. Meanwhile, refuse has piled up in the regional capital pending collection by Zoomlion, a waste management company. An official of Zoomlion, who sought anonymity, told the GNA that the situation was due to shortage of diesel for which reason vehicles of the company could not work. At the Ho central market, traders struggled for space to sell around refuse containers with refuse spilling over. Heaps of refuse could also be seen at some vantage points including the main lorry terminal and the Ho Polytechnic, behind the Engineering Department. The last cholera case in Ho was recorded in 2011 with one person reported dead.
