I Have A Problem With The UN Setting Up Ebola Unit In Ghana - Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The United Nation (UN) has set up an Ebola Emergency Response Mission (UNMEER) in Ghana to tackle the existence of the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) which has taken thousands of life. The Mission will focus on Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone; the worst affected countries. Nigeria also recorded a few cases of the deadly virus; however, they have been able to contain it. When news broke that the UN will be setting up an ebola unit in the country, a lot of people were filled with fear of the virus coming into Ghana. However, Mr. Anthony Banbury, head of the UNMEER allayed those fears indicating that no one will be infected and even if anyone come in contact with the virus they will be taken out of the team. He added at a press conference held in Accra that the missions duty was to establish a Headquarters in Accra, staff it with a hundred experts and provide logistics and expertise as well as vehicles for the operation. But Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia still has misgivings. According to him, the health sector and our emergency healthcare have some loop holes and if Ghana should record its first case, it will be difficult containing it. He said there is no way the UN can confidently assure that none of their officials will come in contact with the virus because they all stand the risk of being infected; especially as they go in and out of the Ebola-infected countries. I have a problem with the UN setting up a mission in the countryThey already have officials working in those countries and so why are they setting up another one in this country. There is a possibility that someone will get infected with the virus. No one can assure us that there will not be any consequences. Our health system cannot contain the virus should one get here because we have not been able to even contain cholera. It is not a joke and so I am not convinced of their explanations I would have wished they take their mission somewhere else, he noted on PEACE FM morning show Kokrokoo.
