Youth and Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga and Accra Mayor Alfred Oko Vanderpuye last Monday inspected the newly-constructed multi-purpose Astro Turf at the compound of Kotobabi 5 JHS. The GH650,000 4050 9-aside pitch, which also has a basketball, volley ball and an 18-seater toilet facility, began last September and it is expected to be completed on January 15 next year. Robert Coleman, the entrepreneur who together with Union Savings and Loans funded the project, told newsmen that the primary objective for constructing the facility was to give the school, his alma mater, a facelift and also to provide a better sporting platform for the school and the community. He pointed out that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed before the construction also indicated that his outfit would provide scholarships to nine brilliant but needy pupils per term. The facility, when completed, would also serve as a recreational ground to the community for a token. Coleman hinted that plans are in place to replicate the module in other parts of the country. Hon Ayariga, after touring the 80% completed facility, cautioned Assemblies, particularly those in urban areas, to sit up and guard against encroachment of public lands. He advised that every school should have a play ground, saying, Where there are no playing fields, you hardly find talents. This is the best module, it encourages kids development and I encourage that we replicate it in other communities. It will serve the people in the community as well. The Mayor stated: This is a testimony of the PPP arrangement. This in indeed a transformation transforming the city and it will enhance and increase sporting activities.
