Govt To Carry Fans To AFCON?

The Minister for Youh and Sports, Mahama Ayariga, says he is not ruling out government taking supporters to the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea next month. After the World Cup fiasco in Brazil last June/July in which some Ghanaian supporters complained of being neglected, there were fears as to whether government would sponsor them to Equatorial Guinea this time around. Ghana became a state of mockery after some fans stayed back in Brazil to seek asylum, a decision which many thought would affect subsequent travels by supporters to national tournaments. Speaking to Grahic Sports, Mr Ayariga stated that, even though government had not decided on anything yet, he knows the role supporters play at such tournaments and so he expects to see them there. He added that, he visited Ghana's Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea during the recent AFCON draw, who briefed him on how supporters would be conveyed during the tournament. "I know how important supporters are to the team during tournaments so I expect to see them there despite not knowing governments decision," he said. "After meeting Ghana's Ambassador to Equatoial Guinea when I visited there, I was impressed about the country's preparation for supporters during the tournament," he added.
