Ghana Set New AFCON Record

Ghana were too strong for Equatorial Guinea as they whipped them by three goals to nothing on Thursday in the semifinal of the Africa Cup of Nations to book their ticket to a record 9th final.

The Pharoahs of Egypt and Ghana had reached the final of the championship on 8 occasions apiece, but the Black Stars’ win over Equatorial Guinea has set a new tournament record.

Ghana have won just 4 titles from their 8 previous grand finales. They won the championship in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982, while they failed to win the 1968, 1970, 1992 and 2010 finals.

Although Ghana played in 8 finals, Egypt are the most prolific nation in the history of the tournament with 7 wins from 8 finals

The four times champions will face Ivory Coast in an all West African final on Sunday and Ghana are aiming for a revenge for the 1992 loss to the Elephants, while Ivory Coast seek a repeat of what happened in 1992.
